Einen pessimistischen Blick wirft die SWP-Fachfrau Citha Maaß, eine der profundesten Afghanistankennerinnen in Deutschland, auf die in vier Tagen bevorstehende Parlamentswahl. Ihr Fazit: „Statt einer wünschenswerten Stärkung des politischen Systems ist zu befürchten, dass die Wahl wenig glaubwürdig sein, zu einem noch schwächeren Parlament führen und die Gewaltenteilung weiter zugunsten der Exekutive verschieben wird. Das spielt Präsident Hamid Karsais Bestreben in die Hände, die Macht seines Familienclans durch klientelistische Strukturen auszubauen.“ Der Vorwurf an die Staatengemeinschaft: Sie lasse Karsai gewähren und schaue weg. „Denn ihr primäres Interesse ist auf eine termingerecht abgehaltene Wahl gerichtet, die den Fortschritt im Prozess der Übergabe der politischen Verantwortung an die afghanische Regierung demonstrieren soll.“

Poetry session held in Balkh MAZAR-I-SHARIF (PAN): Hundreds of writers, poets and culture lovers from several provinces attended a grand poetry session in the northern province of Balkh on Monday. The assembly that stretched into the afternoon started at 9am in the city of Mazar-i-Sharif, the provincial capital. There was also a music programme which marked the end of the gathering. Daud Haqmal, one of the organisers, told Pajhwok Afghan News that it was the second such gathering organised by Balkh-based culture lovers. He said this time the number of attendees was much higher compared to last year. The gathering was organised by the Balkh Literary Movement in collaboration with the Reformative Traditional Jirga. The gathering was aimed at promoting Pashto culture, language and creating unity among people for peace, said another organiser, Ghulam Rasoul. „These kinds of gatherings have been beneficial to encourage people to have their say in national issues and give their opinions,“ he added. A participant, Bayalai Jalalzai, said poets presented their poems about patriotism, national unity and cultural values.

Kunduz police chief escapes unhurt in attack KUNDUZ CITY (PAN): The newly appointed Kunduz police chief survived a Taliban attack on Monday in northern Baghlan province, officials said. Abdul Rahman Syedkheli was traveling from Baghlan to Kunduz when he came nder Taliban attack in Jar Khoshk area of Baghlan-i-Markazi district, deputy police chief, Syed Zamanuddin, told Pajhwok Afghan News. Neither the police chief nor any other police officers suffered casualties in the attack, he said. A cleanup operation had been launched in the area. Syedkheli was to be introduced as the new police chief at a ceremony on Monday, but the gathering had to be delayed due to Syedkheli not arriving on time, the governor’s spokesman, Mahboobullah Saeedi, said. Police commander of 303rd zone, Gen. Daud Daud, and 200 tribal elders also joined the gathering, he added. Taliban spokesman, Zabihullah Mujahid, some police vehicles were destroyed, many policemen killed and that Taliban had surrounded the area.
